He was born in Fontainebleau, South Carolina on February 22nd, 1939, and he grew up with 3 brothers in Concord, North Carolina. He attended Concord High School where he was active in sports, especially football. He graduated with an Industrial Engineering degree from NC State University, where he walked onto the Wolfpack football team his freshman year. He also achieved a law degree from Atlanta Law School. And he worked for Lockheed for most of his adult life with a brief stint selling Real Estate for Harry Norman.
He was happily married to Reverend Virginia Dean Temple Hammett (Jenny) for 63 years until her passing in 2019. He loved to play golf and did play once a week for decades until earlier this year. He was also a competitive Bridge player. He enjoyed playing 3 times a week for 2 hours at a time. He was also a proud member of the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church where he ushered and did volunteer work.
He is survived by his 2 living sons, George Hammett Jr. and Wade Hammett, both of Atlanta.
