Gladys Agusta Whitcomb, age 92, peacefully passed away early Tuesday morning , May 23rd, at her home. She was surrounded by her loving son Bob and family friends. Gladys was born on August 12, 1924, in Springfield, Illinois. As a young woman, she worked for Johnson and Johnson in their Chicago location, where she met her husband-to-be, Robert Whitcomb, Sr. After the birth of their son, Robert Jr., the Whitcombs moved to Atlanta, where they would remain.
After her husband’s passing, Gladys learned to drive and proudly earned her driver’s license. Shortly thereafter, she began working at Northside Hospital as a switchboard operator, a position she held for 31 years. She took pride in her work and was a warm presence for many in the hospital community. She often worked extra shifts and holidays to allow coworkers to have time off to be with their families. She was generous to a fault, and greeted everyone with her warm smile. On her retirement, she was honored by the Northside community. Gladys is survived by her son Robert Jr., of Sandy Springs. She will be greatly and eternally missed by her son as well as her friends and all others who loved her.
