“There are souls who never truly leave us; they become the light that gently guides our steps.”
With love and gratitude for a life fully devoted to her family, we announce the passing of Mrs. Grecia Cano Aristy Garbis, who passed away peacefully at the age of 88 in Suwanee, Georgia. Deeply loved, Grecia will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born in the Dominican Republic into a large and loving family, Grecia arrived in the United States in her early twenties to pursue her education in Boston, MA. She eventually settled in New York City, where her illustrious career in banking began and she met her future husband, Spyros Garbis. Together they welcomed Nicholas and Christine and created a home filled with laughter, wonder, joy, and incredible meals that brought family and friends together to make indelible memories (including an elaborate Thanksgiving meal that she somehow pulled off despite having to work over the holiday).
A private, humble woman by nature, Grecia never sought attention, but she put a priority on family-- raising her children while simultaneously being devoted to her career as a Relationship Banker, and winning many awards in the process.
But her real talent was making everyone around her feel seen, loved, and valued; simply being near her brought comfort and peace. Her kindness, warmth, and generosity was often punctuated with her sweet sense of humor that always surfaced at just the right moment—often over another unforgettable meal.
A devoted wife and mother, adoring grandmother, a cherished sister and aunt, a loyal and steadfast friend, Grecia is survived by her Beloved, Spyros; her son Nicholas Garbis and her daughter Christine Elmore (William); her adored granddaughter Emily Grace Elmore; and her two sisters Mercedes (Melita) Stathopoulis and Maria Louisa Cano. She is predeceased by her sisters Thelma Cano, Leda Tejado, Lilian Cano, and Mercedes Cano; and by her brothers Marco Cano and Felix Cano. A loving aunt to her many nieces and nephews, Grecia was also a cherished sister-in-law, mother-in-law, neighbor, friend, and trusted colleague to so many people whose lives she touched.
While we miss her more than words can express, and her absence leaves a deep void in our hearts, we take comfort in knowing that she is in Heaven. A true gentlewoman with a deep sense of responsibility, her life reflected an immense love for her family. We are deeply grateful for the many years of love, laughter, and memories she gave so generously, and her quiet strength and resilience will continue to guide us always.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 5 th at 11:00 am at H.M. Patterson & Son - Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd. NE, Sandy Springs, GA, with a reception to follow immediately after.
