Harriet Stein Winnerman, born July 19, 1932, passed away on September 15th, 2023. Harriet was predeceased by her parents Dave and Della Stein, daughter Pam Pellon Winnerman and her son Craig Stephen Winnerman. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Julian Winnerman, son Jay Winnerman, and grandsons Cory Winnerman and Zachary Winnerman as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Harriet was born in St. Louis, MO, the first of three children. Her sisters Miriam and Elaine are both predeceased. Harriet was hosting a party for friends from University City High School when it was “crashed” by Julian Winnerman and a friend of his. It was love at first sight and the two dated all through high school. She attended Washington University majoring in Fashion Design until she married Julian on June 15, 1952. On that date a 71 year and 3 month marriage began; they were inseparable partners for 77 years.
In 1966, Julian and Harriet moved their family to Atlanta, GA as Julian accepted a position with Atlanta’s premier department store, Rich’s. As he rose to the Executive Management level at Rich’s, Harriet was the master of the family home. She was very active with all of her children’s activities, opened her home to her children’s friends, was very active in PTA/PTSA, the Riverside Garden Club and many other organizations. As her children became less dependent on her she started working part-time doing Marketing Research where she thoroughly enjoyed meeting and working with the public conducting surveys. Harriet was known for her artistic talents creating beautiful needle point works, knitted afghans, and tapestries. In the evenings, Harriet loved playing Solitaire with an old fashioned deck of cards!
Harriet loved when her family would come to visit at her Atlanta home or their lake home on Lake Lanier. After long days enjoying the dock, boating, and visits from The Charlie and Pat Brown family, she would always have wonderful meals for all to enjoy. The Jewish holidays were Harriet’s specialties - Matzo Ball Soup (the absolute best), Potato Latkes, Pineapple Chicken, Sabbath Candle lightings, Cheesecake and elaborate table settings!
April 19th 2022, Julian and Harriet sold their Atlanta home and joined their son Jay at his home in Summerville, SC. Harriet had always requested that she be allowed to pass at her home; this wish was made possible by her life-long companion Julian providing loving care along with her son Jay and all of the wonderful caregivers from Amedysis Hospice.
A graveside service was held on September 17th, 2023 at the family plot in Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs, GA. The service Celebrating Harriet’s Life was led by her son Jay with her loving husband Julian, grandson Cory, and close friends in attendance. Her presence made a difference to many people; her light will continue to shine brightly through all of those that she had touched through her 91 years of living!
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her honor to the Charity of your Choice and honor her tradition of saying “thank you” and showing kindness to those around you.
