Helen Yurkus, age 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on May 7th. Helen was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa. She was the daughter of the late Stephen and Katherine Zebas. She is survived by her son, Walter X. Yurkus, and daughter-in-law Loretta Groller; her daughter, Barbara K. Steiger, and son-in-law Lionel Steiger; and her beloved grandchildren Margaret Steiger, Matthew Steiger, and Madison Steiger. Helen was married to the late Walter C. Yurkus in New York City in 1960 and lived in Brooklyn and Queens where they raised son Walter and daughter Barbara. She was a bank teller and volunteer at various neighborhood schools. In 2005, Helen moved to Atlanta to live with her daughter and family. She loved all animals, but was a special caregiver to numerous dogs during her lifetime. Helen will be remembered for her selfless approach to life in which she always put others first and always had a smile for everyone she met. She loved chocolate, crossword puzzles, playing cards, praying, and being around her grandchildren and dogs. Helen was a devout Catholic, who was at church the day before she passed. Most of all Helen will be remembered as a kind and loving lady with a warm heart. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Atlanta Humane Society, 981 Howell Mill Rd., NW, Atlanta, GA 30318. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 9, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30p.m. at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. The Funeral Mass will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Holt Spirit Catholic Church, 4465 Northside Dr., Atlanta, GA 30327. Interment will be in New York.
