Henry Barden Allison, II (Bard), 89, passed away on Friday, September 17th. Bard grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended school there. He was in a Sea Scout unit that was stationed at the Ohio River. Upon graduating high school, he was awarded a navy scholarship and attended the University of South Carolina. He was the commander of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
After graduation, he was commissioned in the US Navy. He married Jean Guthrie of Dalton, Ga, who was also a student at USC.
He began his career at Lockheed in 1956 when he joined the Georgia company as an associate engineer, fresh from his naval service. He continued his education with a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from Ga Tech and attended a management institute at Harvard Business School.
During his career, he worked with many programs, but his favorite remains the C-5. He became vice president of C-5/C-141 programs in 1984 and was named Executive Vice President and General Manager of Lockheed-Georgia and a corporate Vice President in 1986. He represented Lockheed at many official functions including formal ceremonies with Queen Elizabeth on the 25th anniversary of Hercules service with the Royal Air Force.
Bard had a 33- year career at Lockheed, retiring in 1993. After retiring, Jean and Bard departed on a world cruise from Ft Lauderdale to Rome. He then pursued his lifelong loves of golf, traveling and boating. They owned a beach house at Fripp Island, SC and the family enjoyed it for many years.
Bard received many accolades during his long life including the outstanding engineering alumni award at USC. He was Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities. Bard was a member of the American Rocket Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Institute of Aerospace.
Jean and Bard enjoyed 66 years of marriage and had four children: Gwenn (Jim) Cianci, Audrey (John) Baxley, Derk Allison and Mark (Janet) Allison. They have seven grandchildren Bob (Adrienne) Baxley, Allison (Matt) Petersen, Carolyn (Ricardo) Sanchez, Brenton Cianci, Alexander Allison, Nicole (Brooks) Prettyman and Bryan Allison. and nine great grandchildren Elsa and Byron Baxley; Kelly, Preston and Evelyn Sanchez; Cooper, Chance and Summer Petersen; and Hazel Prettyman. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church, 86 Mount Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 on Saturday, September 25th at 3:00 pm. Family will receive friends preceding the service beginning at 1:30pm. The family has requested NO flowers, please donate to your favorite charity instead.
