Irmina Gomez Rivero, 91, passed away on January 15, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was born on November 18, 1927 in Matanzas, Cuba and later lived in Havana. In December 1960 she and her family left Cuba due to the Communist regime and settled in the United States. The family lived in Milledgeville, Georgia where her husband, Raul L. Rivero, was a physician, before moving to the Atlanta area in 1972. She was a graduate of the University of Havana and also earned a Masters Degree in Education from Georgia College. She taught Spanish in the Fulton County Schools from 1973 to 1993, the last eight years at Ridgeview Middle School in Atlanta. She is preceded in death by her husband Raul Luis Rivero, M.D., her parents Irmina and Carlos Gomez, and her brother Julian R. Gomez, M.D. She is survived by her children Irmina Rivero Owens (Dale) of Atlanta, Raul Luis Rivero Jr. (Damaris) of Flowery Branch, Maria Rivero McGuire (Jeff) of Lake Bluff, Illinois and Alina Rivero O’Neal (Jim) of Atlanta. She was loved dearly by her nine grandchildren Leslie Higginson (Grant), Kimberly Milliken (Mark), Michael Owens (Beth), Andrew Owens, Libby McGuire, Nick McGuire, Kristen O’Neal, Tommy O’Neal, and Katie O’Neal. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A memorial mass for family and friends will be celebrated Friday, February 8, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Atlanta, Georgia.
