James C. Smith, Jr., 93, a native Atlantan died on Monday, the 27th of August 2018. A veteran of WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy. He began his career at the age of 16 working in the stockroom at Richs Department Stores. Little did he know he would complete a successful 44 year tenure before retiring early at age 62. It was one of his proudest moments. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Smith, and sister, Vivian Gable. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Marcus Merritt; son and daughter-in-law, Michael Smith and Elizabeth Jetton; grandchildren and their spouses, Katie and Park Cofield, Ryan C. Smith; Abbie and Jared Pyles; sister, Hazel Fleming; brother, Walter Smith; and nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be conducted on Friday, the 31st of August at eleven o’clock at H.M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road, NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family one hour prior to the service and a reception will be held following the service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
