

John Porter Bunn passed away at his home on May 15, 2016 at the age of 95. John was born September 7, 1920 in Bayonne, New Jersey. As a young child, he moved with his parents and younger brother to Texas where they lived in various locations, before moving to Atlanta in the mid-1930s. He attended Boys High School and Georgia Tech where he received a degree in engineering. During WWII, he served with Co. F, 543rd Engineer Boat & Shore Regiment in the Philippines and New Guinea where he reached the level of Staff Sergeant before his discharge in 1946. For his service, he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. On April 19, 1947, he married the love of his life, Frances Leoma White, at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church. Frances preceded him in death in 2014. John Bunn worked as a Structural Engineer and Draftsman first at Calvert Iron Works during his college years at Tech, and later with the Lockheed Corporation in Marietta. For the last 30 + years, he was self-employed doing engineering and structural design work for several different clients from Gainesville to Savannah. He finally retired at the end of 2015. He is survived by his three children, Robert Bunn, John Bunn and Judith Bunn Brock; seven grandchildren, Taylor Bunn Shelton, Jennifer Bunn Servo, Heather Bunn Sudduth, Porter Brock, Suelynn Bunn, Brandon Bunn and Scott Bunn, as well as five great grandchildren. Graveside services will be Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 2 o’clock at Arlington Memorial Park.
