He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Kathryn Campbell and John Lauris Mathews Sr. Jack worked successfully as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Affiliated Paper Company, of which he part owned and helped found. He wrote several articles for the paper industries leading magazines in regards to the overall trends in the industry. In Charlotte, North Carolina he conducted opera logs at the Charlotte Metropolitan Opera House to patrons attending the opera the next day.
Jack’s greatest loves were his family, friends, and his music. Married when they were just 18 and 16, Jack and Marion became the greatest love story for generations to come. He was the best dad ever to his “favorite” five daughters. His grandchildren and great-great children brought much joy and laughter to his heart. His bigger than life personality and sincere caring of people endeared him to all he met.
Surviving Jack is his wife of 64 years Marion Elizabeth Seeley Mathews, brother and sister Joseph and Mary Mathews, five daughters and sons-in-law, Marion Hinton(Jeff), Linda Mathews, Kathy Carter, Jackie Lyons(DJ) and Patti Ross, grandchildren and spouses, Kelly (Matt), Beau (Kelli), Jesse (Gitte), Sarah, Dan, Barbara, David, Robert, Davis, Blake, Morgan and Ben, and great-grandchildren, Shyam, Laxmi, Theresa, Clarence, Michaih, and Cheyenne.
Services celebrating Jack’s life will be conducted on Wednesday, the 23rd of March at two o’clock in the afternoon at H. M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel. The family will gather for a private interment at Arlington Memorial Park. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family Wednesday afternoon from half past twelve o’clock until the hour of service at H. M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road, NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
