Joe was very passionate about AIS and demonstrated this through his work with the parents, as an employee, coach and recently as a volleyball referee. He was my first assistant coach for the Varsity Volleyball Team. One of his best gifts, along with his lovely and supportive wife Maureen, to AIS was his daughter Samantha who was an amazing student, athlete and person throughout her career. Although some time has passed since we have seen Joe, his infectious energy, optimism, confidence and that beautiful voice stayed with us and will be forever remembered. Maureen and Samantha, the Wise family offers our deepest condolences and have offered our prayers for the repose of Joe's soul.  On the day of learning of his passing I attended daily Mass and offered up my prayers and sacrifice in his memory.  I only met him once during your retirement dinner, but knew of him through you, Maureen, and your dedication to family and service.

I've stated previously, getting the news about this sudden passing hasn't been easy for anyone because my cousin Joe really meant a lot to our family.  I didn't see him often but my heart was definitely sad...  He was a different kind of guy - the kind that could have a positive impact on anyone, no matter what age.  He was intelligent, charismatic, full of knowledge & wisdom; and his jokes would have your stomach hurting in a good way.  And he truly loved his family...  

To his Maureen & my cousins Sam, Kim & Dionne - I am sorry that he had to go so soon.  We are all going to miss him - I am definitely going to miss his craziness, his jokes, even his old school music posts...

Dear Maureen and Sam,
I am so very sorry for your loss - and ours. I remember the first time I heard Joe's voice, it was on your answering machine when I first tried to make contact with you, and it said "today is the first day of the rest of your life - have a super day!" I believe that is how he lived his life, which is comforting... He was so inspiring. Each member of my family I told the sad news to had a nice anecdote from last april to tell about him: that he just had a nice chat with them, or that he played with their children, etc. Even though he did not speak French, he still found a way to communicate and share the fun! I will remember him as the most welcoming, fun, smart, fit (!), loving host dad ever...
I am so sorry that I can't be with you both today, but you are in my mind and heart all the time. I will miss him very much. Right now he must be enjoying the sun in paradise and watching over you :)

Soon after Joe became my broadcasting partner at GaRRS, he became my friend.  Truly, to know him was to love him.  May his memory be a blessing.

I am so sorry to learn of your loss. I met Joe at LA Fitness a few years ago and also connected with y'all at the Friday Night Jazz at the High Museum which was a great treat! Every time I saw Joe he always had a warm greeting and welcoming smile for me!

My wife Teresa  and I shared a happy day with Joe at Brownsville Old Timers Weekend in July 2014.  Even if we did not see other on any other occasion, it was almost certain that we would have our reunion at the Brownsville Recreation Center and Brownsville Old Timer's Weekend.  
We are so saddened that we will not be able to share those times again, but the memories of Brownsville are still strong.
The memories are too numerous to mention here, but our family, the Blackman's, have known the Grayman's since residing at 289 Blake Avenue beginning in 1947, the year of Joe's and my brother Greg's birth.  
Joe left us far too soon, but in his transition, he will now join his beloved father (Joseph, Jr. "Buster") and mother (Lois).
I did not have the pleasure of meeting Joe's Atlanta family. Unfortunately, we will not be able to be in Atlanta with you on this solemn occasion, but look forward to his memorial in Brownsville in April. Please accept our deepest sympathies and we hope you find comfort in the many expressions of love you have received.

I want to give you my sincerest condolences for your loss and would love to share a memory that I have of Mr. Grayman. As an athlete at AIS, everyone knew who Mr. Grayman was. He was such a positive character to have around the gym especially during basketball season. In high school, when I was on the varsity team, I always remembered during timeouts he would give a shout out to the alumni in the stands. When he did, I always used to tell myself, I can't wait for the day where I get a shout out by Mr. Grayman. And of course, how could I forget his laughs and smiles with Coach Richardson on the sideline while he announced the games. He had such a cheerful spirit about him that is not easily forgotten. 
You are on in my thoughts and prayers.

JG, I'll miss you my man, right now there is an ach in my heart because of you. When I told people that you had passed they were speechless, or said no not Joe, that's the Joe affect.  From 1983 when we first met at IBM NY we formed a special relationship. No matter where we were New York, Vermont, Atlanta, Barbados, Boca Raton we continued to grow closer. During that time the bond even became stronger when you and Maureen got together, and then you guys had Sam. You blessed me when you asked me to be one of her Godfathers. When Joy and I got together she understood our love for one another. I hurt right now but I know that I'm fortunate that I had you in my life.  Joey what a trip, what a journey, thanks for all the love.

But I guess I thought I would see you again! You always announced me as "AIS's all everything" when really it is you who meant and means everything to our athletic department!! so thank you! for making my 4 years of highschool athletics and basketball especially the best times of my life!! Wishing I could hear you announce me, motivate me, make me laugh, or just have a regular conversation with you again! Rest in paradise!! Sending so much love to your family!! Coach G taught me the value of a pushup... more importantly, the value of pushing yourself, testing your limits, and helped to build character at an important time in my life. I am eternally grateful for those grueling practices, and especially the moments after a game when, pulled aside, he would talk some sense into me.

Joe is one of the best friends that I have ever had, or will ever have. We spent many, many hours over a 5 year period at AIS, just talking. Even after we parted ways, we were always so happy to see each other, like long-lost brothers. I am going to miss Joe, but I will see him again in heaven. I only wish that I had told Joe, I love him!

A confident man - with love to share with so many. And an extra-ordinary nurturing love for Samantha, who will continue to realize his lessons of justice and compassion. One Love.

Joe and I have the same birthday. When Joe discovered this fact, he dubbed me his "Taurean Brother". His daughter and my daughter played on the basketball team together at AIS. Joe was "The Voice of AIS Athletics" with his beautiful, rich voice. I sometimes did the statistics book during the games while Joe did the Public Address System. I thank him for always being there to keep me in check and mostly for all the laughs we had. I am very sad to hear that this wonderful human being has left us. Peace, Joe. From your Taurean brother.

Joe was a kind, wise and wonderful person. Always there to help others, he gave of his time willingly to students and colleagues alike. Those of us who knew Joe are united in our grief at his passing. May memories of his incredible spirit give strength to his family and friends.

Joe hired me 12 years ago at Atlanta International School.  I will miss my Brooklyn buddy.

We at The Georgia Radio Reading Service (GaRRS) will miss Joe.  He was a dedicated volunteer for us and for our blind and print-impaired audience.  And he was a joy to work with.

Joe will be mis at his second home Kroger every day he visit use for him news paper and he greet all with a smile and then good morning beautiful he will be mis by his kroger family.

Joe was a kind and energetic member of LA Fitness as long as I knew him. He had a great sense of humor , loved his family and spoke about them often. We're going to miss him but we know we've not heard the last from Joe, at least if we are going to the same place. Love you, my brother in Christ .
