

Julia Mitchell Ivey died peacefully on December 14th 2013 after enduring a long illness. Her first husband of 41 years, Tillman Mitchell, died in 1992. Julia is survived by her second husband of 20 years, George H. Ivey Jr. Other survivors include her brother Harvey Farmer, her niece Barbara Hunt, two step-sons, George H. Ivey III, and L. Gregg Ivey, daughters-in-law, Paulette W. Ivey and Paulette H. Ivey, grandchildren Joseph Ivey, Samuel Ivey, Nathanael Ivey, Julie Marie Ivey, Brooke Ivey Levenson, Gregg Ivey Jr., and five great grandchildren Rachael Ivey, Nina Ivey, Ben Ivey, Samantha Ivey, and Juliana Reese Levenson. Julia was born in 1933, to Runie Marvin and Urie Mary Farmer of Rockdale County. She attended Conyers High School, and later received her degree in Business Administration from Georgia State. She also studied finance at Dekalb College, and graduated from the School of Savings and Loans at Indiana University. Julia began her career with Decatur Federal in 1953, and literally worked in every department. She was known as the “Superwoman” of Decatur Federal, always amazing everyone with her energy, extreme attention to detail, and the willingness to mentor others. In 1965 she was appointed to treasurer of Decatur Federal, and in 1988 she was named as senior vice president/corporate secretary for Decatur Federal. Aside from her many responsibilities at Decatur Federal, Julia found time to serve on the Boards of Directors for the Greater Atlanta YWCA, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Georgia’s National Osteoporosis Foundation. She was also the second woman to serve as Chairperson of MARTA. In 1980 Julia was appointed by Governor George Busbee as the Chairman of Private Colleges and University Authority. She was a graduate of Leadership Atlanta and the Regional Leadership Institute. In 1988, she was honored as one of “Dekalb’s Women Who Have Made A Difference.” Julia was a member of the Dekalb Chamber of Commerce, Atlanta Economics Club, and Dekalb Luncheon Club of Business and Professional Women. She was a charter member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain. Visitation for Mrs. Ivey will be held at H. M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road, NE, Atlanta, GA 30328 Thursday evening, December 19th, from 6PM to 8PM. Her funeral service will be held Friday afternoon, December 20th, at 2:00 PM, also at Arlington Chapel. Julia was greatly loved by her family and friends, and her genuine, winsome personality will be missed. We are comforted to know that she is with her Heavenly Father.
