

Julian B. Finkel, 96, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, died in Atlanta, GA of natural causes on September 29, 2012. Born in Philadelphia in 1916, Mr. Finkel graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Class of 1937, with degrees in both mechanical and structural engineering. He was a proud Penn supporter and faithfully attended all his class reunions for 70 years. Mr. Finkel started his career in the manufacture of metal windows and building products and worked in metal manufacturing his entire career. At the beginning of World War II, Mr. Finkel wanted to enlist in the Navy to become a naval officer. The Navy, instead, put his considerable talents to use as a naval architect. At the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Mr. Finkel was responsible for innovative designs ranging from retrofitting World War I submarines to mechanical systems used on battleships and destroyers. His work efforts resulted in numerous government patents on devices that protect ships from enemy detection. Mr. Finkel moved to Atlanta in 1963 to become the general manager of Blair Manufacturing Company in Marietta, Georgia. Mr. Finkel was preceded in death by Alice, his wife of 50 years, and his daughter, Jane. He is survived by his daughter Nancy F. Lawler; son-in-law Timothy Lawler; grandson Jay; and many adoring nieces and nephews. Burial will be private. A celebration of Mr. Finkel’s life will be held at a later date.
