

Mrs. Lula S. Powell of Sandy Springs passed away Sun., Nov. 13th. She was born in Atlanta on July 15, 1930 to Robert Heindel Scott and Lula Belle Paris Scott, making their home on Habersham Dr. She attended E. Rivers Elementary, Washington Seminary, and graduated from Mount Vernon College for Women in Washington, D.C. On Aug. 7, 1952 Lula married Sumter S. Powell of Pelham. They resided in Brookhaven, Marietta, and lastly in 1965 moved to Sandy Springs.
Lula was the quintessential homemaker and was named Mother, and more recently, Grandmother of the Year. She was a life-long and dedicated volunteer involved in many civic organizations, holding numerous positions at local, state, and national levels. She was a member of the 5th District, Sandy Springs Woman's Club for more than 40 years; Fort Peachtree chapter of N.S.D.A.R.; Mother's Club; Garden Club; FOSSL (Sandy Springs Library). She was a Girl Scout leader before she had children of her own. She also served for several years as Chairman of the Selective Service Board, appointed by the Governor of Georgia. She was very patriotic and strongly supported causes benefitting servicemen, veterans, children and animals.
She was often asked to speak and present programs on a wide range of topics to other organizations. Her cooking and baking were well known and well loved by many. Her positive attitude and stoic nature were a strength and inspiration to many. She was known as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, as well as a second mother to many. Her favorite role was that of "Memaw". She was pre-deceased by her husband Sumter Powell, Sr., parents Bob & Lula Belle Scott and brother Bob "Skippy" Scott, Jr. She is survived by her children, Laura Powell of Sandy Springs, Sumter S. Powell, Jr. of Dahlonega, Sarah & Bobby Johnson of Lilburn; grandchildren Jessica & Jarad Conner, Rebecca, Cory, and Emily Powell; Michael, Elysia and Lilah Johnson; one great-grandchild; one cousin; nieces and nephews; honorary family members Karen, Charlie and Christopher Romano of Sandy Springs. The family is grateful to friend and attorney Mark A. Smith III, as well as the many wonderful medical, home health and hospice professionals for the service, comfort, humor and love they provided Lula. Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23rd at the Arlington Chapel in Sandy Springs, Dr. Jim Cantrell officiating. Reception immediately following. Burial will be private.
