Our beautiful and beloved Mamarie passed away on June 9, 2026 just three days before her 102nd birthday.
Marie Elizabeth Walsh Treadway was born on the Charles Walsh farm In Snydersburg, Md. to Charles C. and Bessie Rill Walsh.
Born June 12, 1924 she spent much of her early childhood in a log house without electricity, running water or heat, just a well, oil lamps and a wood cookstove. One of her chores was to chop the wood for the cookstove before she left for school. As you often hear from folks born during that time, she did indeed walk miles in the snow to her two-room schoolhouse. Growing up on a farm she knew what it was to work hard every day. Most days she cooked, cleaned, washed, ironed and worked in the fields. She learned to sew at an early age and continued to sew throughout her life. Her parents told her if she wanted new clothes she would need to learn to sew. From this she learned to be thrifty, which she continued throughout her life. Although working on the farm was hard work and money was scarce, she was quick to tell you she had a wonderful childhood with loving parents. She had many cousins and they spent Sunday afternoons in Walsh’s meadow enjoying a picnic and swimming.
After she graduated from high school in 1941, she met the love of her life, Marvin Treadway. They met at the ballfield behind Simmons ice cream store in Snydersburg, Md where ice cream was 5 cents for a double dip. In 1942 Marvin joined the Navy to do his part for our nation in World War II. Marie waited patiently for him as he served on the USS Wisconsin until the end of the war in 1945. They wrote hundreds of letters to each other during those years.
On November 3, 1945 her dreams came true when she married Marv.
Marie loved flowers. Throughout Marv’s career in x-ray, she made their homes in Maryland and Georgia beautiful with flowers and gardens. Their homes were always full of friends and family.
Marvin and Marie were blessed with three children, seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Family Christmas gatherings at “5800” always had Santa, “ronis” (mac and cheese), and homemade ice cream. The grandchildren remember fondly how much they were loved by Mamarie and Gramps, spending days swimming, and at Six Flags and Disney world.
When Marvin started his x-ray sales business in the 1970’s Marie was right there beside him. She loved working in the office and socializing with clients and employees. Marie and Marv loved to dance and they were often the last to leave the dance floor after a party.
Marie loved her church and singing in the choir. She was a member of Shiloh UMC for 39 years and Chamblee First UMC for 60 years, not only singing but teaching Sunday School and helping wherever she was needed.
Marie was predeceased by her husband, Marvin, and son Ben. She is survived by her son Bruce Treadway, daughter Shelli Treadway Jenkins, daughter in law Chris, her grandchildren Mandy, Katie, Christy, Matthew, David, Laura, Greg, eleven great grandchildren, and her sister Julia Gouge.
There will be a graveside service in the Sunrise Chapel at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs Ga on Sunday, June 14 at 2 pm officiated by her grandson, the Reverend David Jenkins.
Friends are invited to greet the family before or after the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Chamblee First United Methodist church, 4147 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd, Chamblee, Ga and designated for the music program.
