Mariette Sachs McDaniel
March 29, 1936 – January 5, 2019
Mariette Sachs Pennera McDaniel, 82, of Atlanta, Georgia, formerly of Sarrebourg, France died peacefully in her sleep on January 5, 2019, at Insignia Senior Living Community in Sandy Springs, GA. Born March 29, 1936, in Sarrebourg, France, she is predeceased by her parents Jean and Angele Sachs, her first husband Jacques Pennera and her second husband, Matthew Fontaine Maury McDaniel Jr. and a daughter Dominique Pennera.
Mariette, as a child, lived through World War II in one of the most devastated regions of France along the German Border. Her earliest memories of Americans were the smiling faces of GI’s as they liberated her hometown and handed chocolate bars to the children. She never forgot those early years of scarcity, and it led to a lifelong commitment to always have an extra place at her table for anyone in need of a meal or a friendly shoulder for support. People seemed always to find her in moments of crisis as she shepherded them through life’s challenges.
Mariette’s three children survive her, Angele Pennera Barrow and her husband John, Martine Widmayer and her husband Reinhold, Matt (McDee) McDaniel and his wife, Susie. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Charlie Hawkins, Eve (Manette) Rogers, Alexandra Head, Fontaine Widmayer, Matthew McDaniel, IV, and Thomas McDaniel. Also, her four great-grandchildren, Brody and Finn Hawkins, Tripp and Jacque Rogers and one brother Xavier Sachs.
A Memorial Mass will be Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 10 o'clock at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in St. Mary's Chapel, 4465 Northside Dr., Atlanta, GA 30327.
