Martin Witter Nicholes, Jr., age 95, a native of Atlanta, died April 8, 2018 at Somerby Senior Living, Sandy Springs. The family is very grateful to the wonderful staff at Somerby, and also to the nurses of Homestead Hospice who were so caring and comforting to him and his family. He was a graduate of North Fulton High School and the Georgia Institute of Technology, which he attended on a football scholarship. He was a member of Signa Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, the TM Society and Scabbard & Blade Military Society. He was a WW II Veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre of War as a Navy Lieutenant on the Destroyer Escort USS Gilmore. In the fall of 1945 he returned to San Pedro, CA. for decommissioning of his ship. While there he met June Cox, formerly of Tulsa, OK, and they were married on Jan 4, 1946 at Normandy Wedding Chapel in Long Beach, CA. They made their home in Atlanta where they raised their four children. Martin was a founding member of Cherokee Town & Country Club. He took early retirement as Regional Manager of Simplicity Pattern Co. and later retired a Federal Realty Specialist with GSA. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, and is survived by a daughter, Carolyn June Nicholes of Sandy Springs Ga., sons Martin Witter Nicholes III and wife Mickie McClelland Nicholes of Asheville, N.C., Stephen Traweek Nicholes of Marietta, Ga., and Alan Bayly Nicholes and his wife Tommie Howard of Dallas, Ga. Also, his granddaughter Stacy Nicholes Aquino of Centerville, Ga., and two great grandchildren. Private graveside service will be held at Arlington Memorial Park.
