Marvin L. Becker, 93, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at his home in Buckhead. Marvin was born in Marietta, Ohio on November 23, 1928 to Elvin and Mary Becker. After graduating from Marietta High School and attending Ohio State University, Marvin worked at a Kresge store in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where he met Margaret (Peggy) Bartok. On November 24, 1951, Marvin and Peggy married at St. Therese Church in Johnstown. Soon after, Marvin joined the Army. While in the Army they lived in Jessup, Georgia; Fort Belvoir, Virginia; El Paso, Texas (four times); Johnstown, Pennsylvania (two times); Idar-Oberstein, Baumholder, and Kaiserslautern, Germany; and Colorado Springs, Colorado. After 20 years in the Army, Marvin retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1971. During his Army days, Marvin and Peggy lived in Europe for six years, travelling extensively.
Survivors include his son Mike (Laurie) and daughter Brooks; his daughter Melanie and children Alex and Elena; and his daughter Michelle and children Michael and Christina. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Peggy Becker, his brother Harvey Becker and sister Marilyn Klohn.
After retiring from the Army, Marvin went back to college, attending the University of Texas at El Paso. They moved to Atlanta in 1972 and lived just miles away from Marvin’s brother Harvey and his wife Judy. Marvin earned a Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration from Georgia State University. After working for one year at DeKalb General Hospital, Marvin found his dream job at Piedmont Hospital. He was there for 20 years and retired in 1994. Marvin was in charge of the operations departments at Piedmont and ran a very tight ship. He made daily rounds of all of his departments and during his recent hospital stay, a couple of employees recognized Mr. Becker.
Peggy and Marvin enjoyed dancing at Miss Kitty’s, and Piedmont held Marvin’s retirement party there. Hopefully Marvin and Peggy are dancing together in heaven. Marvin was very handy and tackled any and every type of home renovation project. He did major construction at their old house in Sherwood Forest and helped his children with painting, renovations, and even deck construction.
After moving to Atlanta, Marvin and Peggy travelled for three weeks every November, going to Egypt, China, Russia, India, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Africa, and numerous countries in Central and South America. They even spent a week in the Galapagos Islands.
When they first moved to Atlanta, they lived in Chamblee and attended Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. After moving to Midtown Atlanta, they attended the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In February 2012, Marvin and Peggy moved to Lenbrook in the heart of Buckhead. They enjoyed sharing dinners in the various restaurants with their new neighbors and exercised daily until Covid limited their options. Our family is grateful for the support of the wonderful staff at Lenbrook.
Due to Covid-19, a private funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations to the following organizations are welcome:
