

Mary Ann Groome, 91, formerly of Atlanta, died March 23, 2017. She was born March 17, 1926 in Greenville, NC. She was the daughter of Herman and Annie Higgs Duncan. She graduated from Greenville High School and Duke University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. There she met her college sweetheart, Jim Groome. Following graduation, they married June 19, 1948 in Greenville at her family church on her parent’s 25th wedding anniversary. Most of her married life was spent in Atlanta, GA where they raised three children. There Mary Ann was a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church, the Cottage Garden Club, and Cherokee Women’s Golf Association. She was always involved with her children’s activities including Boy and Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls. She wasan accomplished seamstress and especially enjoyed smocking outfits for her small grandchildren and once took a cake decorating course to make them customized birthday cakes. Other interests included gardening, travel and friends. When they retired in 2004, they moved to Lanier Village Estates, a lovely retirement community in Gainesville, GA and enjoyed their latter years among many new friends. They joined Gainesville First Methodist Church and the Chattahoochee Country Club. For almost 45 years the family enjoyed their summer home at Lake Burton. Mary Ann and Jim were married for 66
years. She is survived by son Chip Groome and wife Cathy of Atlanta; daughters, Vicki and husband John Cobb of Lynchburg, VA and Missy Milner of Athens, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
