Our beloved mother passed away August 15, 2018 in the presence of her family. She joins our dear father, Albert Francis Hurley, Jr., in eternal life. Mom was born February 11, 1925 in Brockton, Massachusetts, to Caroline Francoise (Luce) Kingman and Frances Calvin Kingman. Her father died in 1928, thus beginning a rich if challenging adventure during the Depression years with her mother working and the two of them surrounded by love and support from a large contingent of family friends who became her aunts and uncles. A stellar student, Mom received a full scholarship to Katherine Gibbs Business College following graduation from Brockton High and became a legal secretary in Boston. At the war’s end, our parents rekindled a high school romance and married in 1948. They began a whirlwind life together as Dad advanced at General Electric, moving frequently around New England before settling for 8 years in Wheaton, Illinois. Later, Dad’s career took them to Milwaukee and then Chicago where he served as president of two small manufacturing companies, culminating in their final move to Atlanta in 1979. Mom was a true business partner when Dad achieved his dream of owning his own company, a venture that also involved son, Treb. After Dad sold his business to Epson America, Mom and Dad began a twenty-year adventure travelling the world, playing golf, painting and volunteering for local organizations.
Our mother believed her most important accomplishment was the family she created and nurtured. However, she accomplished so much more. A compassionate perfectionist, Mom believed God’s Will for her was to learn, teach, explore and share her riches. She imparted those passions to her children and grandchildren, always urging them to see the beauty of their surroundings and the people in them. Her vacation planning skills took us to all regions of North America, but her heart – and ours – was centered on Cape Cod. Her love of natural history was evident in her beautiful oil paintings and needlework. Her passion for mathematics shined in her superior bridge playing and her investments planning. Her culinary skills spoiled us all and nurtured so many friends they acquired throughout their lives and their children’s friends, too. Each of our parents volunteered countless hours to his/her favorite non-profit organization. For Mom that was the Assistance League of Atlanta (ALA). Any gesture in memory of Mom may be given to Operation School Bell, c/o Assistance League of Atlanta, PO Box 80769, Chamblee, Ga. 30366-0769
Our mother’s final few years were so enriched by the skilled care and love of an amazing group of people. We wish to express our gratitude to her cherished doctor, Richard Kaplan and his assistant, Susan Stacy; Arlene LeClaire, Kathy Taylor, Jerry Myers, Salma Furbush and Vicki Matson of Senior Home Companions; and the fine team from Amity Hospice: Paula Fortner, Jaleesa Brooks, Frederick Caldwell, Chaplain and Charity Brooker.
Our mother is survived by her children - Dianne Hurley Simmons (Rod), Albert F. Hurley, III (Julie), and Jeffrey Kingman Hurley and her grandchildren, Joseph Scott Graham, Stephen Alden Hurley, Jeffrey Charles Hurley, Rachel Marie Hendricks (nee, Roberts), and Cody Owen Roberts.
