

Mary India Steinbruegge, 95, of Atlanta, GA passed away on November 17, 2013 at her home at Lenbrook. She was born in Atlanta, GA on October 15, 1918 to the late Roy Connie and Lucille Ragsdale Upchurch and was the granddaughter of the late I. N. Ragsdale, former Mayor of Atlanta. She married the late John Henry Steinbruegge on February 1, 1951 and lived a wonderful life with him in Atlanta and San Francisco. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Steinbruegge, her parents and grandparents, her brother Col. Jerry Upchurch, her son-in-law, Sims Maddox, and her brother-in-law Thomas J. Sanders. India graduated from Girls High School in Atlanta and attended Oglethorpe University. She served as a volunteer for the Red Cross in Europe during World War II, worked for many years for the original Rich’s Department Store in Atlanta, and at J.P. Allen’s in Atlanta. India traveled to New York as a buyer and loved purchasing and selling children’s clothes. She loved decorating and gardening. Bridge and luncheons with friends were things she adored. She has been a long-time member of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Buckhead. India is survived by her two loving stepdaughters and their families, Janet (Bob) Beauchamp and Susan Maddox; grandchildren, Rob Beauchamp, Bonnie Beauchamp Cooke, Jay Sims Maddox, Wesley Maddox, John Maddox, Susan Rollins Maddox, Janet January; and 12 great-grandchildren; her sister, Constance Upchurch Sanders of Johns Creek, her sister-in-law, Kathleen Upchurch of Gilbert, AZ, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in her honor at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church Chapel in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Red Cross.
