Keep the faith.
Stop your fretting and stewing.
Let’s get some organization here.
Three important mantras to live by, according to Mary R. Wohlleben, who did just thatduring her 97 years. Her life was an exceptional, vibrant journey full of love, laughter and family—indelibly marked with her grace, unique style and fierce independence. Mary passed away peacefully on the evening of June 23, 2023, and her spirit lives on in her three daughters, four grandchildren, one sibling and extended family of nieces, nephews and friends.
Born in Norwich, New York, on January 12, 1926, to the late Michael (Mike) A. Martin and Josephine (Julia) Carletto Martin, Mary was the third of six children. Her brothers, John and Tony Martin, and sisters, Evelyn Currie and Louise Taranto, all passed away in recent years; she is survived by her younger brother, Michael A. Martin, Jr.
In November 1954, Mary wed George H. Wohlleben, who worked as a Production Controller at the Bendix Aviation Corporation, Scintilla Magneto Division (now Amphenol). Together, they lived in Norwich with their three daughters until 1977, when the familyrelocated to Charleston, South Carolina. George passed away in October 1997, and, several years later, Mary moved to nearby Daniel Island, South Carolina, where her townhouse door was always open. In 2021, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to be closer to her daughters, Elise (Craig) O’Connor of Bluffton, South Carolina; Karen (John) Cross of Atlanta, Georgia; and Kristin Martin Wohlleben of Atlanta, Georgia. Mary also was the proud grandmother (known as Mare) to Kate and Matthew (Allie) O’Connor and Michael and Caroline Cross.
Those who knew Mary well always will remember her kindness, graciousness, generosity, love of reading and mystery and thriller programming, good food, travel, sunsets at the beach and time spentwith her family. As a Roman Catholic, her faith and spirituality were deeply personal, yet she always kept an open mind concerning the beliefs of others. Mary also supported a number of charities throughout her life and felt strongly that people should donate to causes they believed in.
Well into her nineties, she genuinely enjoyed living on her own, keeping up with current events, discussing pop culture (especially the Royal Family), shopping, and mastering her Roku devices and Amazon Fire tablet—all the while eating her favorite Jelly Belly® snack envelopes. (Information Technology and other support services were courtesy of her very willing children).
A private family memorial service to honor and remember the life of Mary R. Wohlleben will be held in late 2023 in Charleston, South Carolina.
