Nicholas was the son of Oliver Smart and Valerie Jackson Smart, and from those beginnings he carried forward a steady, hard-won sense of purpose—one that shaped a life marked by work well done and days met with quiet resolve. He earned a bachelor’s degree, a foundation that supported a lifetime of building, learning, and moving thoughtfully through an ever-changing world.
An adventurous spirit guided Nicholas across borders and opportunities, not for spectacle, but for the honest satisfaction of creating something lasting. He became the owner of several UPS Stores, and he also owned an international imports business that brought wine and other specialty goods from New Zealand to the USA. In these pursuits, his diligence showed itself in the details, and his inspiration in the way he connected places, people, and possibilities—bridging the familiar with the faraway, and making room for others to see what could be done with patience and vision.
Nicholas was cherished—held close in the regard of those who knew him—and his presence left a gentle, enduring imprint. He is remembered with gratitude and affection by his brother, John Smart; and his friends, Marian Macleod Elliott, Stewart Scholfield, and Ruth Sikes.
Nicholas will be laid to rest at Wyndham Cemetery, Mimihau School Road,, Mimihau 9892. New Zealand
