Tommy and I have always kept you and Phil in our minds. Got up this morning thinking about you both, Seen his obituary in Search on the web and was shocked to hear of his passing. Our hearts go out to you and your family. We loved you and Phil and was so happy to be in your lives for many years.  Always remember his kindness and compassion will carry on in your lives forever. Lean on Jehovah God for comfort, because he is the God of comfort. 

God, who comforts those who are downhearted, comforted us.”​—2 CORINTHIANS 7:6.

We remember Phil Smallwood with deep respect, gratitude, and affection—a founding partner of our firm and a guiding force in its formative years. His influence extended far beyond architecture; he shaped our firm’s culture with his warmth, integrity, and generosity of spirit.

Though he had just retired when I joined Smallwood in 2000, fresh out of school, I had the privilege of knowing him. Even in retirement, Phil remained a constant presence, always greeting new employees with a firm handshake and a personal introduction. I’ll never forget how he made me feel welcome from day one. Phil’s legacy lives on in the community he built and the values he instilled. He will be deeply missed.

Phil was an amazing man and mentor.  Working with Phil for over 20 years, the last 6 as a partner, I felt that I became very close to Bill and Phil.  Phil introduced me to the passion of bird hunting, introduced me to great friends like Doug McGarrity, Bob Whitley, Merrill Earnest, Bill Thompson, and many others.  I would often sit in his office and take in a measure of scolding, re-assurance, Phil-osophy, current events, lessons learned and business acumen            (with the occasional private joke mixed in).  Phil exposed   me to most of the project management  skills  and perspectives that I have carried thru-out my career since leaving SRSS.    He taught me that, as professionals, we provide a service....not servitude.  One of Phil's greatest legacies will not only be his family and reputation, but the multiple firms, careers, and projects around the world that he was so instrumental in helping to foster.

My condolences to Jolie, Scott, Faye, and my friends at SRSS.  I have fond memories of our days at TAW and CCA.

My Uncle Phil and I had so many amazing conversations at family gatherings. His intelligence far surpassed anyone else I’ve known yet could talk to me as a child in a way I understood. He taught me about the importance that leaving a mark on the world was and how important family is to us all. He loved me and my sisters like we were his own and even tried to get to me to Tech instead of UGA. Some of you will get the reference of how we engaged in football and real life talk. He was a one of kind human and the world is missing him. I miss him. My love to Aunt Sue and my cousins as losing your Dad is the worst. A Widow’s walk is not easy but I know with love…we walk it with honor. Love you, Uncle Phil.
