Robert R. Allen

Robert Richard Allen, 86, of Sandy Springs and formerly of Dunwoody, died June 19, 2017. Born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Mr. Allen was raised in West Palm Beach, Florida. He came to Atlanta to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he graduated with honors in aeronautical engineering in 1952. He was immediately commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy and became a naval aviator. He served his country during the war in Korea and continued in the reserves at NAS Atlanta, retiring after 20 years as a full Commander. In addition to his military career, Mr. Allen was employed at Delta Airlines, and then went on to work at Lockheed International, where, after 27 years, he retired as an International Sales Manager. He attended Dunwoody Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Echols Allen; and three daughters, Deborah Turner (Terry) of Nashville, TN, Vicky Schell of Simpsonville, SC, and Cissy Flanigan (David) of Atlanta, GA; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. There will be a visitation at Patterson’s Arlington Chapel from 6-8pm on Thursday, June 22. A private family ceremony will be held at 9:30am on Friday, June 23rd at Georgia National Cemetery with military honors. Reverend Dorman Huggins of Dunwoody Baptist Church will officiate.
