

Roberta Donaldson Day, 96, of Atlanta, died peacefully on October 23, 2013 following a brief illness. Born in Pontotoc, Miss., on April 4, 1917, to Dr. and Mrs. Robert P. Donaldson. She was a graduate of Delta State Teachers College in Cleveland, Miss. Following graduation, she accepted a teaching position in Birmingham, Ala., where she met her husband-to-be, Mahlon Wesley Day. They were married in the Norwood Methodist Church in Birmingham on June 12, 1942. Mr. Day was a Naval Aviation flight engineer and they lived in Millington, Tenn. and Alameda, Calif., during World War Two.Following his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Day was an executive with Weyerhaeuser Corporation and the couple made their homes in Worcester, Mass., Chicago, Ill., and Marshfield, Wis. before moving to Atlanta in 1957. Both Mr. and Mrs. Day were active members of Peachtree Road Methodist Church. Mrs. Day was active in community affairs as a Pink Lady at Northside Hospital for many years and was one of the first volunteers at the Buckhead Christian Ministry.Mrs. Day was predeceased by her husband, who passed away in 1983, and her daughter, Donna Roberta, who died at the age of three in 1947. She is survived by her children: Richard Peyton Day (Margaret) of Memphis, Daphne Kathleen McWhirter (Barry) of Marietta, and Robert Mahlon Day (Marie) of Atlanta. “Nana” is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Wesley (Rebecca) Day, Margaret Ann Day, Peyton (Kyle) McWhirter, Greer (David) Hughes, Matt (Jessica) McWhirter, Gray (Sydney) McWhirter, Andrew (Natalie) Day and Katie (Land) Bridgers. She was blessed with twelve great grandchildren: Mahlon, Sara Beth, Katherine, May May, Greer, Day, Evans, Hope, Kaelin, Caitlin, Britain and Finley. Other survivors include two nephews and two nieces.
Mrs. Day’s memorial service will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Buckhead Christian Ministries (2847 Piedmont Road, Atlanta, GA 30305) or Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.
