November 10, 1936 – June 15, 2025
Shala Dodson, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully on June 15th in Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 88. Known affectionately as “Gibby” to her grandchildren and many who loved her, she was a spirited, stylish woman with a sharp wit and an even bigger heart.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Shala grew up alongside her twin sister, Shirley, and older sister, Berdina. She married the love of her life, Dan Dodson, in 1958, and together they raised a family that brought her endless pride and joy. Dan’s business took the family from Chicago to Milwaukee, then to Colorado Springs, and eventually to Atlanta, where they settled and built a beautiful life.
Shala had a keen eye for fashion—always impeccably dressed. In her younger years, she enjoyed bridge club and hosting elegant dinner parties. She had a passion for decorating for every holiday—especially Christmas, which she made feel truly magical. A proud patriot, her love for her country was unwavering, but it was her devotion to family that defined her most.
She is survived by her son, Dan Dodson Jr., and her grandchildren, Rachel Dodson and Daniel Dodson III, with whom she shared a profound and irreplaceable bond. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dan Dodson Sr., and her son, Rick Dodson.
A funeral service will be held at H.M. Patterson & Son - Arlington Chapel (Allen Rd, Sandy Springs) at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 21st, and is open to the public. A reception will follow at the funeral home.
