He graduated from the Heiskell School and went on to attend Mount Vernon Christian Academy before graduating from North Springs High School. Spencer was a talented and competitive tennis player during this time and helped win back-to-back state championships while at Mount Vernon Christian Academy. He went on to play tennis at Dekalb College on a tennis scholarship and achieved honorable-mention “All-American” honors in doubles. After college, Spencer became a Certified USPTA Teaching Professional and worked at many of Atlanta’s private country clubs as a teaching pro before becoming the Director of Tennis at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Cashiers, NC.
He eventually left the professional tennis world to pursue a career in franchise sales with Raving Brands, where he rapidly became national sales director. After the sale of Raving Brands, he cofounded Atlanta Franchise Group. Atlanta Franchise Group went on to purchase and franchise Cinnaholic LLC, a kosher and vegan cinnamon roll bakery concept. Spencer was President and a co-owner of Cinnaholic LLC.
In the early 2000s, Spencer rediscovered his interest and enjoyment of music and expressing his innermost emotions through painting. He called it his “therapy” as he attempted to visually convey his world as he saw it and felt it. Some of his paintings were sold to various art collectors and were eventually seen and promoted by an individual who was prominent in the art scene; thus the exposure to his artwork was accelerated at that time. Spencer had many of his works displayed in private collections around the southeast including a home on the Atlanta Decorators ShowHouse Tour, Trinity Art Auctions, the Georgia Lieutenant Governor’s office, and he was retained to produce his paintings for PJ’s Coffee House locations (a national restaurant chain based out of New Orleans, Louisiana). Spencer continued painting for family, friends and for his own enjoyment throughout his life. In that Spencer usually painted from his core of love and sensitivity to the life around him, it was important to him that he could express his true thoughts and feelings through his artwork.
He remained connected to many of his friends from his school days and enjoyed many cherished memories and laughs with them as well. Being eager to help when there was a need, he always endeavored to share himself and give whatever he had to others. Spencer grew up attending Sunday school and church at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Buckhead, where he experienced the meaningful and loving relationship of Paster Bob Marsh and his wife Myra.
Spencer is survived by his parents; George Lowe Reid and Lee Wood Reid; his daughter Alden Ella Reid; his brother Michael Andrew Reid; and his nephew Luke Alexander Reid.
The family plans to have a private graveside service at some time in the near future
