Stephen George Demko

Stephen George Demko, 79, of Atlanta, GA passed away on August 4th, 2026. Born on August 2nd, 1947, in Kingston, Pennsylvania to the late Stephen George Demko and Katherine Koval, Steve lived a life defined by intellect, humility and devotion to others.

Steve graduated from Seton Hall University and received a doctorate in Mathematics from Kent State University. He spent the majority of his career as a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Known for his incredible intellect, he carried his knowledge with a humility that put everyone at ease. Those who knew him well treasured his quick wit and sense of humor, qualities that made him as beloved in casual conversation as he was respected in the classroom. An avid reader and lover of music he found constant enjoyment from books and a wide variety of musical genres. He carried these passions with him throughout his life.

In 2000 Steve received a heart transplant from Emory University Hospital, an experience that deepened his gratitude for life and strengthened his commitment to the people and pursuits he loved most. This further led him to follow a calling to the diaconate to which he was ordained in 2007. As a deacon at Holy Spirit Catholic Church he became a pillar of his parish community, earning a deep respect through his sincerity, compassion and steady presence. His faith was not just something he professed, it was the foundation he used to build his life, guiding his relationships, his service, and his outlook on the world.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Maureen, son Stephen (Louisa) Demko, daughter Elisabeth (Paul) Kopplow, his five grandchildren August, Edgar, Shea, Walter, and Georgia, and his brother Joseph. In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his brother, Jim.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 15 at noon at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4465 Northside Dr. NW, Atlanta, GA. A reception will follow. The family invites all who knew and loved Steve to join them in honoring a man whose gentle spirit, sharp mind, and faithful heart left an enduring mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in eternal peace.
