Stephen Wilson Powell, Jr. (“Wilson”), age 32, of Denver, Colorado, slipped the surly bonds of this world to touch the face of our loving God on August 26, 2025. He was the adored son of Elizabeth A. (“Lisa”) Powell and Stephen W. Powell of Atlanta, and the beloved brother of Elisabeth Carter Powell of Boston, Massachusetts.
Wilson was a favorite of his ten aunts and uncles and fourteen cousins for his impish character and ability to get away with endless good trouble growing up. They have shared so many “remember that time when Wilson…” memories since his passing. Wilson also leaves behind his countless friends, who he loved as family. And his beloved dog, Charlie, standing watch at the window for him.
Wilson was born in Richmond, Virginia, and grew up in Atlanta where he attended Trinity School and The Westminster Schools. He excelled as a member of the Westminster lacrosse team, as both leader and quintessential teammate. He earned First Team All-State honors as a defenseman because one of his best friends was the goalkeeper and no one was getting to his friend. An opposing coach nicknamed Wilson “the Surgeon” for his quickness and stick skills, and coaches would tell their top scorers, “Stay away from that kid with the pink shoelaces.”
Wilson carried his friends-first ethos to Wake Forest University, where he earned a computer science degree with an entrepreneurship minor and was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. After graduation, Wilson joined Capgemini’s consulting practice in Washington, DC, and Denver.
Wilson was devoted to his family, inseparable from his sister, and an extraordinary friend whose loyalty knew no bounds. He was an amazing thinker and writer. And he loved to cook, the Braves, fitness training, golf, fishing in the Gulf, shooting with his dad, his friends’ successes and, more than anything, simply being with his best pal Charlie and the people he loved and who loved him. He was a warrior for his family and friends. And he always sought to give and love and belong.
Wilson’s funeral Mass will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 14th, at the Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 48 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive (two blocks west of the Capitol) with complimentary parking in the nearby parking deck at 75 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. The Mass will also be livestreamed on Wilson’s webpage at www.hmpattersonarlington.com.
A celebration of Wilson’s remarkable life will follow immediately at Bold Monk Brewery, 1737 Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard in West Midtown. With the many guardian angel winks he has been sending us, we fully expect him to show up!
