Dear Lewis, Jessica and Jeremiah, 
How sad that Sylvia passed away. My childhood memories are that we used to regularly visit the Wezer family in Assendelft.  It was always very pleasant ("gezellig") and there was a lot of laughter. Sylvia was as charming as her mother and had the laughter that all Wezers are known for.
We wish you much strength with this loss.

I met Sylvia in 1981, during a typing course at Schoevers, Amsterdam, as we were both in our gap year, she had stopped her study Anthropology and I had finished my BA English Language and Literature. We were still very young and immediately became friends, made a lot of jokes about the teaching method (typing on music) and went to the beach in her Renault 500 (probably her mother’s car on many Wednesdays (then we had no lessons).  When she moved to Atlanta we kept in touch, always when she visited Holland we would meet . And when I was on an exchange program around 2003  (3 weeks) as Communications Director for Solvay Pharmaceuticals in Marrietta, we spent several days together. She was very fond of J and J and I could share stories about our two sons. On the picture you see Syl and me in 2018 in Assendelft, the last time I saw her. I will cherish my memories of her and wish her family lots of strength. Best wishes, Puck Bossert

My dear Sylvia,
How lucky I’ve been to call you my friend for so many years.

We first met at the Chastain Park playground when our children were just four or five. You were carrying a bag from Amsterdam and speaking Dutch to your kids. We quickly discovered we had more in common than just being moms—we both came from nearby corners of Europe, you from just outside Amsterdam, and I from Germany. Those early playground encounters turned into a real friendship once our children started at AIS and we both lived in Garden Hills.

Sylvia, I can’t begin to count how many coffees and cookies we shared over the years—afternoons spent in each other’s kitchens or gardens, always filled with conversation and laughter. You were one of those friends who really listened, not distracted, but fully tuned in. Your advice was always smart and thoughtful. There’s this warmth about you that made me instantly feel comfortable. And your smile and laughter was contagious. You couldn’t help but smile back. Your eyes had this little sparkle, like you were always curious or amused, but always in the best way. 

How special was the time when we both worked together at the Westminster School and shared a tiny prep-office together! You enjoyed teaching and the students and colleagues cherished your enthusiasm and commitment.

When we moved to California in 2011, I was so grateful for technology—our regular Skype calls, coffee in hand, made the distance feel smaller.

Sylvia, I miss you deeply. The space you fill in my heart will never be empty.

Dear Lew and family -

I was so very sorry to hear about Sylvia's passing this past week. I have so many fond memories of Jeremiah and Lizzy's 4k French families coming together for dinners, picnics, skating parties, shared vacations, etc. Sylvia was a warm and vivacious member of the group, and always had a sparkle in her eye. It was hard to keep up with all of her accomplishments and comings and goings.

I'm sorry I won't be in Atlanta to celebrate her life with you, but know that we will be thinking of you all.

What I miss about Sylvia the most is the warm, open way she led me to feel when I was with her. She was well intentioned, gentle, and intelligent. I never picked up on any confusing neurotic micro aggressions or hidden agendas. If there is an afterlife, I hope that I will be able to connect with her again. She was a joy.

Sylvia and I were learning to ski at the same time. Both were hesitating to go down the slope and the instructor said “…just try. It’s not like you’re going to fall off the mountain…”. 
I turned around and Sylvia had gone over the edge and was clawing her way back onto the slope and then skied down the run – of course she did.
It’s the good times that swell up at times like these. She was vibrant, gregarious, sparkle-y-eyed, knew how to laugh. Friends will always live on in our memories, never aging. I’m a big fan of Westerns, so, Sylvia, we’ll see you down the road.

I had no reason to suspect my old law partner Lew had such good taste in women until I met Sylvia. She was a gentle and delightful lady with a kind smile.  She actually worked for me one day as an interpreter when I deposed a Belgian fellow who supposedly spoke only Flemish. As the day went on it was obvious that he spoke English as well as we did and I had been told otherwise simply as a ploy. Whenever he slipped up and revealed his English, Sylvia and I would exchange a wink and a nod. She did a fine job that day. I offer my sincere condolences to Lew and the rest of the family. I know she will be missed. May she rest in peace.

The Sylvia I knew was pretty fearless. She was the type of girl who, when she knew what she wanted, completely went for it.
First to want to travel and go shopping in ‘the big city’ Amsterdam
I met Sylvia in 1972 when we had both moved to a new neighborhood with our family. We had a lot in common one thing being…. crazy about the two brothers next door. 
When I moved to Houston Texas in 1977, she was the first to visit us. During that summer we travelled through a lot of states together with my family and managed to meet an idol of hers, Michael Jackson.
Wherever we lived in the years after that we kept on writing each other letters until the digital era. 
I remember when Sylvia had met Lewis in a kibbutz and being totally in love with him and eventually moving to America, getting married and having children. 
She missed Holland after a while and when her mom died missed talking to her on the phone terribly.
Sylvia took all kinds of jobs but they all had to fit in with the children’s holidays. So, she starting ‘subbing’ at her children’s bilingual school, teaching chemistry among other things in French! She got a job at an office, she passed her real estate exam, drove around the state representing a medical company. I was amazed at her fearlessness and resilience.
She was proud of her family and would have been a proud grandma if it hadn’t been for the disease.
I have been missing her for years.

All of my memories of Sylvia are fond childhood memories. She had a warm smile and beautiful laugh. She will be missed. I am so sorry for your loss, and happy to have known her and her beautiful family.

I am grateful for the warmth of Sylvia's friendship and humour, offered freely and regularly, usually with a  Starbucks coffee in hand. We enjoyed walks together, putting our worlds to rights as our children grew and matured at AIS.
