Clyde Erwin Piercy, age 99 of Sanford, Florida, passed away on September 30, 2018. Clyde, known fondly to all as "Papa," was a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and faithful fried. He was a remarkable man with the highest integrity, knowledge, honor and character. Clyde was born in Richmond, Virginia on November 20, 1918. As a child his family moved first to Normantown, West Virginia and then to Sanford, Florida.
Clyde was the oldest of six brothers and graduated from Seminole High School in Sanford in 1937 with a perfect attendance record. He lettered in track in High School and received a scholarship to Stetson University, which he was unable to accept as his family needed his help. In 1942 he entered the United States Postal Service as a substitute carrier. Clyde and his five brothers all served in the military for this country. During World War II, he left the postal service and with his brother Earl, who was killed in action in Germany, served in the US Army. Two other brothers (twins) served in the U.S. Navy and two brothers served in the U.S. National Guard. Clyde became a tank commander in the 742°d Amphibian Tank Battalion. At the time of his discharge from the Army he was conducting testing on a new tank flame thrower with the Landing Vehicle Testing Board at Fort Ord, California. He returned to the postal service in 1946 and in 1962 be became the Assistant Postmaster at Sanford, Florida, a position he held until his retirement in 1977.
Clyde was a deacon at First Baptist Church of Sanford and served on the Counting Committee for many years. He was an avid bowler.
Clyde was predeceased by his parents, Glyde E. Piercy and Susan Bess Piercy; his younger brothers, Kent Piercy of Detroit, Michigan, Denton Piercy of Levittown, Pennsylvania, Donald Holly Piercy of Sanford, Florida, Halsey B. Piercy of Sanford, Florida, and Earl J. Piercy of Sanford, Florida; his beloved wife of 72 years, Margaret Jackson Piercy; and his grandson, David A. Warren of Brandon, Florida.
Clyde is survived by his son, Winston E. Piercy of Cathedral City, California, and a daughter, Susan P. Warren (husband Jetl) of Brandon, Florida; four grandchildren, Margaret "Beth" Lichtenberger (husband Ken) of Orlando, Florida, Michael E. Piercy (wife, Mandy) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Matthew J. Warren (wife, Megan) of Alexandria, Virginia, and Laura E. Warren of Tampa, Florida; three great grandchildren, Nicholas J. Warren, Julia E. Warren and Liam J. Warren of Alexandria, Virginia; sister¬in-law Freda Piercy of Sanford, Florida; as well as many other extended and loved family members.
The family will receive friends on October 7, 2018 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., with a funeral service to be held at 2:00 p.m., both at Oaklawn Chapel, 5000 County Road 46A, Sanford, Florida. Internment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
