It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of beloved, husband, father, brother, and friend Colin McCarthy Quinn, 58, of Sanford, Florida. Colin was born in Stillwater, Minnesota on May 29, 1967.
Raised on a farm in Somerset, Wisconsin by his loving parents Elaine (McCarthy) and Richard Foley Quinn, Colin was the youngest of five children. Colin’s mischievous smile and ready sense of adventure were balanced by his gentle nature and sense of humor. With acres of land to explore, he balanced his love of books with his love of nature; hiking, biking, and swimming in the summer; and snowmobiling the winter away.
A self-professed nerd, Colin embraced new technology, science fiction stories, Dungeons and Dragons, and poured his talents into restoring a classic Mustang. Introduced to the thrill of a good Kawasaki, his drive to collect and tinker with his many motorcycles earned him the nickname: the small engine whisperer.
Colin earned bachelor’s degrees in English and computer science and met the love of his life at the University of Minnesota. Dapper in a top hat, in tails, and a mile-wide smile, he married Julie, radiant in a 1920s bridal gown that showcased their appreciation for the Art Deco era.
Quick to smile and slow to anger, Colin took the triumphs and tragedies of life in stride. He was generous with his time and his skills, lending help to whoever needed it. His Meals on Wheels clients would light up when he came to their door because he always listened with empathy, curiosity, and kindness.
Colin built a network of good friends that spanned his interests in music, motorcycles and craft beer; and enthusiastically embraced his obligations as a Boy Scout dad and IT professional. He loved zipping around in his Miata, travelling with his family, and watching deer graze from his front porch. Colin’s life was full of purpose, adventure, love, and laughter. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
Colin is survived by Julie Hillstrom, his wife of 33 years, his son Emmett, his sister Shannon, his brothers Foley and Devin, his in-laws Jennifer, Mike and Erin, and a whole slew of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Elaine Quinn, and his sister Kelly.
