Mr. Hugh Carlton, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend went home to be with the Lord September 23, 2017. He was born October 17, 1923 in Cooks Hammock, La Fayette County, FL. Mr. Carlton was a decorated World War II Veteran and former Seminole County Educator who lived a life of service to others. He will be truly missed by Darlene, his devoted wife of 48 years, and their blended family of 6 children, George Carlton (Karen), Patty Carlton, Sueze Sipley (Donny), Lorie Johnson (Rudy) Allen Nettles, Judy Carlton, 8 grandchildren, and 9 great grand children. Mr. Carlton was preceded in death by his parents, G. Hugh Carlton, Sr. and Sarah Frances, his siblings: George, Jack, Cecil, John D, Selma, Ouida, Mary; and daughter, Judy. Hugh's boyhood was spent in the woods of North Florida where his father ran open range cattle. The family moved to Sanford when Hugh was 10 years old. Growing up in small town life gave Hugh the opportunity to find odd jobs to help support his family during hard times. Hugh was a self-starter and at the age of 10 landed jobs such as delivering telegrams for Western Union, selling peanuts door-to-door with a goat cart, and working in a saw mill for $12 a week. Hugh faithfully gave all of his earnings to his parents and remained grateful for the dime he received in return so he could go to the local “Picture Show". While still quite young, Hugh joined the Navy and served honorably from March 1943, until February, 1946 as Ship's Mechanic and Forward Gunner aboard the Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) # 506 which landed on a Normandy, France Beach on June 6, 1944, (D -Day). After serving in the Navy Hugh attended Stetson University in Deland, FL earning a Master’s Degree in Education Administration. Hugh served the Seminole County School District for 34 years as a principal, teacher, coach and District Level Administrator. Hugh often stated that coaching was his passion. He was a gifted mentor who instilled in others his own desire and ability to serve the community. Hugh believed in giving others the tools to become more, no matter their natural talents and abilities. Upon retirement form Seminole County School District, Hugh spent many years enjoying a life of diverse hobbies such as: horse and dog training, stock man, bee keeping, gardening, fishing and hunting. His wife Darlene was continually at his side taking his hobbies as her own. Hugh's life was indeed a life lived full and well filled with many friends and loved ones who cherish the time spent together. Hugh was quick to share the two things he knew for sure in life; his need for a Savior and that Jesus Christ was his. We will miss you for now Mr. Carlton A visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church in Sanford on Friday, September 29, 2017 from 11:00am to 12:00pm with a funeral service to begin at 12:00pm. Following the funeral service will be a graveside service scheduled to take place at Oaklawn Park Cemetery in Sanford at 1:30pm.
