Holmes Peyton Hurst Jr.

October 23, 1943October 10, 2017

H. Peyton Hurst of Sanford, Florida, passed away on October 10, 2017. The celebration service will be held at Baldwin Fairchild Oaklawn Chapel, 5000 County Road 46A in Sanford, Florida on Sunday, October 22, at 4:00 p.m. Pastor Jeff Ryan of Three Timbers Church in Bennington, Nebraska will be officiating. There will be a reception for fellowship following the service. Peyton was born in San Francisco on October 23, 1943, to Holmes Peyton Hurst, Sr. and Mary Jane Chadderdon Hurst. He loved to say he ‘grew up on Bourbon Street’, living just outside New Orleans in Metairie, Louisiana. He attended elementary, junior and high school there and he graduated from Southeastern Louisiana College, in Hammond, Louisiana, in 1966. After graduation and a short stint working for Delta Airlines, Peyton went to work for The Travelers/First Floridian Insurance Company (where he met Suz) until his retirement in 1999, and then for Homewise Insurance Company until his second retirement in 2010. He always felt his career(s) were a gracious gift from God. He enjoyed playing golf but was game for any type sport – from Cornhole to softball to skiing. He loved watching sports, especially soccer, baseball and football, both college and professional. Faith.Family.Career. – in that order. Peyton truly lived his belief that his faith came first, and that his family was founded on that faith, joined in love and kept by the grace of God. He loved being involved in his many Bible Study groups and spent time volunteering in several ministries, including a ministry for women in crisis and in prison ministry. Peyton is survived by his wife Suz and his children, Michael, Ashley, Rusty (Jennifer), Benn (Akiko), Kelli Durrant (Roja), Dominica and Jennifer Ellis. Suz and Peyton are also blessed with eleven grandchildren and nine nieces and nephews. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions or donations may be given in Peyton’s honor to the charity of your choice. Two organizations the family would suggest are cancer research, specifically glioblastoma research, or Alzheimer’s research.

He was larger than life. You always knew when Peyton was in the room by his grunt and gregarious laugh! He continued to send birthday cards after he retired to all his employees; he never forgot. He was a great boss and friend. He was thoughtful, kind & generous. I will miss him dearly.

We will always remember how much he cared for his staff. Yes, at times, he could dish it out but he never lost sight of the human side of all employees. He was a remarkable manager and made us feel part of a team. It's been over 24 years since I left Travelers, but Peyton would send me two birthday cards (one normal, one somewhat "off" but very funny) every year since I left. Who does that? Not many people! He will be missed. Paula
