James Steven Mata

James Steven Mata, of Lake Mary, Florida, passed away on July 28, 2026, at the age of 71.

Born on September 8, 1954, in Dearborn, Michigan, James grew up in Lincoln Park, Michigan. He dedicated 38 years of service to Northwest Airlines and later Delta Air Lines, where he worked in Equipment Service from 1973 until his retirement in 2011.

James was a man of deep faith who always put God, his wife, his children, and his family first. He was proudly patriotic and had a deep love for his country. Gifted with an incredible ability to fix almost anything, he enjoyed working on cars, collecting tools, and helping others whenever they needed a hand. His generous spirit, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor brought laughter and joy to everyone around him. He especially loved spending time at the beach and cherished every opportunity to be with his family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph James Mata; his mother, Margaret Mata; and his brother-in-law, Ron Yokley.

James is survived by his loving wife, Karen Mata; his children, Joseph (Gabby Pineiro) Mata, Keaton Mata, and Vi Bowers; his beloved grandson, Lucas James Mata; his sisters, Donna (Charlie) Conatser and Marilyn Yokley; his nephews, Brian (Lisa Hall) Conatser and Steven Yokley; his niece, Lynette (Thomas) Hull; his great-niece, Caroline Margaret Hull; his lifelong best friend, Steve Taylor; his faithful dog, Bailey; and numerous cousins throughout Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, Florida, and Arizona.

James will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his love of family, his kindness, his laughter, and his willingness to help anyone in need. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to VITAS Healthcare Hospice for the compassionate care, comfort, and support they provided to James and his family during his final days.
