John served honorably as a Beach Jumper in the U.S. Navy 1967-71, specializing in electronic warfare, and served aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard. John contributed his considerable talent for electronics to Stromberg-Carlson: Siemens for 22 years in several capacities including systems testing, proposals, and as a member of a special task force that oversaw the installation of telephone systems for various remote communities. He completed his career after serving as a technician and project manager of Intelligent Transportation Systems for 10 years at Traffic Control Devices, retiring in 2015.
John had a passion for stock car racing and could be found any given Saturday night in the pits at New Smyrna Speedway with his crew of friends and family, on Sunday afternoons working on racecars with his son Jeff, and he made many trips to NASCAR races. John had high expectations for his kids, but they knew he loved them. He helped Heather learn algebra, which was nothing short of miraculous, taught Jeff about cars, and was a steadfast supporter of Gretchen’s endeavors in the marching band. John’s dreams were realized when he was able to have a special cross-country vacation to see Amanda and her family in the summer of 2019. In his retirement, John developed a keen interest in family history. He also loved animals and rescued several dogs and cats over the years.
John was preceded in death by his mother Gene Rose (Mast) Wielgos, his dad Ken Wielgos, and father, John Edwin Hack. He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Linnie “Earline” (Langford) Hack of Sanford, FL, sister Sheryl Henderson of Cocoa, and his four children: Jeffrey Sweatland (Jodi) of Chuluota, FL, Heather (Sweatland) Lyda of Marietta, GA, Amanda (Sellon) Basset (Chad) of Arvada, CO, and Gretchen (Hack) Cordell (Steven) of Acworth, GA.
