Joseph (Joe) Bruce Anson, of Longwood, passed away on November 6, 2021. He was 76 years young. Joe was born the only child to loving parents Joseph (Joe) and Violet (Vi) Anson, in Niagara Falls, NY, on August 12, 1945. His parents - products of the depression-era and WWII generation - were married 69 years; the latter decade residing with their beloved son.
Joe’s first love was ice hockey, but he later discovered the American pastime on neighboring farm sandlots and was captivated by his boyhood hero - Mickey Mantle. As a Florida resident as a teen in 1960, Joe became ever more passionate about baseball; developing into a sure-handed shortstop and dependable 3-hole hitter for Cocoa High School. He, like his father, served in the United States Marine Corps where his “ball skills” earned him a roster spot on the USMC baseball team. Originally a Yankees fan in his youth, his golden years were won over by the gritty and determined divisional rival, the Boston Red Sox.
Joe graduated from the College of Journalism at the University of Florida in 1970. He achieved a Bachelor of Science in Advertising and remained a loyal supporter of the Gator Nation as a booster, UF Alumni Association member, guest lecturer, and proud UF parent.
He was a fiercely competitive entrepreneur and brilliant creative mind. In 1983, Joe co-founded Anson-Stoner, Inc, - an advertising agency - where his pioneering work as Creative Director and President achieved award-winning success and prestige. Post-retirement, he served as President of his homeowner’s association and ventured into the fitness industry, spending over a decade as a Planet Fitness franchisee. Joe enjoyed bowling, ice hockey, weightlifting, and pick-up basketball into his fifties. He actively supported his children’s and grandchildren’s pursuits. Most recently, he was a staple spectator at his eldest grandson’s high school sporting events.
Survivors are sons Andy Anson (Gayle) of Maitland, Florida, and Daniel Anson (Stephanie) of Cross Creek, Florida, daughter, Kasey Hayden (Drew) of Lake Mary, Florida; six (6) grandsons - Andrew and Luke Anson of Maitland, Camden and Christian Anson of Cross Creek, Liam and Jack Hayden, and newborn granddaughter Charley Hayden of Lake Mary.
He will be sorely missed, but always remembered by his loving family and friends. A memorial service will be held at Baldwin-Fairchild Oaklawn Park Chapel, 5000 County Road 46A, Sanford, Florida on December 3rd, 2021 at Noon.
