OBITUARY

Mary Maury Charles

December 29, 1930March 25, 2021

Mary Maury Charles, age 90, of Lake Mary, Florida passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2021. Mary was born December 29, 1930 in Kansas to the late Frank and Ruby Alice Maury.

Mary was adventurous, generous and loving. She spent her career working as a Special Education Administrator and Teacher with a special place in her heart for these students. She thoroughly enjoyed travel and adventure as she journeyed around the globe with her grandchildren, family and friends soaking up all the sites and learning about new cultures. She was also gracious with her time by volunteering at several hospitals, including Central Florida Regional. Being a hard-working and devoted mother, the relationships with her children, grandchildren and friends were the things she held most dear.

Mary is predeceased by her parents; husband of 20 years, James Charles and siblings, Dr. Lucien Maury and half-brother Frank Maury, Jr.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Brett Smith (Audrey) and Charlotte Smith-Wilkes (Jamie); six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; close friends, Lisa and Spike Pike and a host of extended family members and friends.

In lieu of Flowers, please consider a donation to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or The Salvation Army.

We exchanged Christmas cards with Mary for several years. Mary's cards always included a hand written note about some event of the previous year, events that were usually about traveling to some spectacular location or about her family. Some years, she included pictures in the card. I posted my favorite picture here. This picture came with advice to not ride camels or not let travel mates borrow your camera if you do. Mary's cards, aside from Charlotte's Christmas letters of course, were always a Christmas highlight for us. I'm grateful for those memories that Mary unknowingly created for us with her kind and thoughtful gestures.
Our thoughts are with Mary's children and her grandchildren, wishing them peace and comfort through their grief.

When we were volunteering together at the hospital I remember hearing so many of her travel stories. I enjoyed them so much. And I was surprised to meet her when I joined the Red Hats at her church - she was so kind and she helped me get to know the other ladies in the group. She always saved me a seat to sit by her at the luncheons. I love her very much!
