She was born in Newton, North Carolina on November 22, 1949. She was married to John E. Jansky on March 22, 1986. Sandra had a distinguished career as a bank executive that spanned over 55 years and was known for her significant contributions to the banking industry. She began her career in Charlotte, NC with First Union in 1967, subsequently held significant leadership positions at multiple banks, and finally retired as Executive Vice President & Senior Risk Officer of Truist Bank in 2022. Throughout her career, she pummeled through the glass ceiling as she climbed the corporate ladder and held many first-time women led leadership positions.
She was active with the Risk Management Association (RMA) of Philadelphia since 1975, Chairman of RMA (2002-2003), a Member of the Executive Committee and Nominating Committee of RMA (2000-2004), and a Member of Regulatory Relations Task Force (2001 to 2022). Sandra was active in community initiatives within the Central Florida market that included serving as an original founder and Chairman of CFCRC (affordable housing), Chairman and Mentor for Compact (at risk children) and worked diligently with the Foundation for Orange County Public Schools as well as numerous other civic organizations.
Sandra’s family and friends repeatedly describe her as being larger than life and it is difficult to detail just how much influence she had, and how many lives she had changed over the years. She was passionate about banking, but even more passionate about family; she poured her heart and soul into making their lives special and creating lasting core memories. She was the center of the family, and very much filled the role of matriarch. Sandra was the first to provide support, guidance and understanding anytime a loved one reached out. She loved to plan holiday gatherings, cooking alongside her husband, but most of all she loved to bake and was incredibly talented at it. At a noticeably early age, she developed a love for reading and you would often find her pouring over the latest thrillers, biographies, or industry books. Sandra also had sophisticated taste when it came to fashion. She was always well put together and known for wearing vibrant colors and had beautiful purses and shoes to coordinate with every outfit. Sandra also supported many charities, including those dearest to her, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the American Cancer Society, and the Second Harvest Food Bank.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Angela Dawn, parents James Leon Winstead and Betty Winstead and brother James Winstead, Jr.
She is survived by her husband John E. Jansky, children Danny Whaley Jr. (Melissa), Andrew Whaley (Colleen), Christina Joy Stokes (Scott), and John Michael Jansky (Margeaux), sisters Priscilla Verble (Mike) and Lucinda Walker, eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
