SADLY, WE SAY GOOD-BYE:
Tom Lewis of Sanford, FL was called home by the Lord on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at a local hospital from complications with COVID19. Tom will be laid to rest in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. A Celebration of Life for Tom will be held at Grace UMC later when the world feels safer.
He is preceded in death by his only child Tracy Elaine Baldwin (1969-2006).
He is survived by his loving wife (and soulmate) of 52 years, Jean. He is also survived by two grandsons, Patrick Weiland of Sanford, FL and Jack Weiland of Australia, Great Grandson Miles of IL, Brother Robert C. Lewis of Charleston, SC, sister-in-law Joyce Chaplin, brother-in-law David and sister-in-law Janis Blocker of Walterboro SC. Many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Tom was born in Valparaiso, IN in 1942 to the late Thomas and Maxine Lewis. He graduated from Hialeah High School and joined the US Navy shortly after in 1959.
On August 10, 1968 he married Jean in Ravenel, SC. During Tom’s career as a computer technician, they lived in Laurel, MD, Edison, NJ, Schaumburg, IL and finally Sanford, FL.
Tom was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam conflict as a missile technician. He also had the honor of serving in the US Navy Bluejacket choir and was commended as one who possessed social ability and was willing to use his talent to contribute to the welfare and pleasure of his shipmates.
Tom was caring, humble, loving, quick witted and helpful. He seemed to know everything and could fix just about anything. We called him the engineer and encyclopedia.
Tom was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Lake Mary, FL for 21 years. He sang in the choir (had an incredible bass voice) and will be a wonderful addition to the choir of angels. He also led and participated in multiple teams.
Tom’s hobbies were car racing, reading and watching war stories and when he could sing, Barbershop. He also enjoyed quality time on the back porch with Jean and Patrick at the end of the day. As he would say, “I enjoy your society”.
Everyone who remembers him is asked to celebrate Tom’s life in their own way, raising a glass of their favorite drink in his memory would be quite appropriate. Instead of flowers, Tom would hope that you will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for some poor unfortunate soul in his name.
