Obituary for Dennie Sue Wallace

Dennie Sue Wallace was born June 4th, 1940. Her mother thought to name her “Denise Susan”, but then decided since she would be calling her “Dennie Sue” anyway, she kept it at that. She grew up in Long Beach, California, and went to Long Beach Poly High School, graduating in 1958. She played the violin in the orchestra there.

She always wanted to travel, so she joined the Air Force. After boot camp, she was assigned to San Francisco, and remained there for the next 2 years working with the food services. Without the anticipated travel, this was not an appealing career.

She then returned to Long Beach and took a job at McDonnell Douglas airlines. She worked as an accountant at the Lakewood facility for about 30 years. She retired in 1994.

She was a lover of Long Beach, a fan of her hometown her whole life. She knew all the local goings-on and read the Press Telegram daily, many times writing to the opinions editor, and even getting published.

Dennie was a sports fan, and especially enjoyed watching baseball, football and rugby teams play. She was also an animal lover. She made sure to feed some stray cats who came around and had a dog named Jolie for many years.

She did fulfill her dreams of travel. Hawaii was a favorite, and then she hit Ireland and England. Later she took on Germany and Poland. She also enjoyed a visit to the midwest with her sister to meet with their father’s family, the Wallaces. But some of her favorite journeys took her to Civil War battlefields in the eastern US. She had gathered and read many books about the war and was thrilled to see the places in person and learn interesting details from the tour guides. Dennie was a lover of all things American.

Besides the Civil War, she had one other obsession….Dennie was a Trekkie. She loved the original series best and had an encyclopedic knowledge of all the episodes. She also liked Star Trek TNG and Voyager, having strong opinions about the various captains. But Captain James T. Kirk was always her favorite.

She attended many Las Vegas Star Trek Conventions, developing relationships with other “Trekkies” and enjoying their company at the events. Afterward, she would write detailed notes and stories about the conventions and send them out to those far-flung fan friends. She was a favorite for these writings.

Dennie never married, but was well-loved and cared for by her sister, Nancy, after their mother’s death in 1996. After Nancy’s passing in 2000, her children, Dennie’s nieces and nephew, continued that care.

Dennie passed away peacefully on Monday morning, June 23, 2025. She is now rejoicing with her sister and mother in heaven.
