After being born in Des Moines, John and his family spent several years in Fort Madison, IA before settling down in Southern, CA (with a brief stint in Bentonville, AR, where he spent his freshman year of high school). He graduated from Garden Grove High School in 1970. After graduation, John began work for his father at Tri-Cities Refrigeration before taking over the business with his wife Suzi in 1985, and becoming the “Iceman”. He was a hard-working, honest person who would always go the extra mile, as attested to by the number of repeat clients and satisfied customers. He hired on additional employees over the last several years, and in 2022 sold the business to Jason, who had worked for him for over 10 years.
Beyond an in-depth knowledge of his business, John had several passions he enjoyed throughout his life. He loved to go fishing and could spend hours on a boat, hooking up multiple poles, throwing a “woolly booger” on the hook, and losing himself in the surroundings. He loved to golf and would often drive to San Diego to tee-off with his friends and family. He had a passion for hockey and the Mighty Ducks, which began after he took a puck to the face. He loved to play dice and cards games, from Pinochle and Hand & Foot to – more recently – Nineteen. But his true love was Texas Hold’em, and he even got to play in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. He was also a master of all Trivia-related games, and won trivia contests galore. And he liked to tell jokes, lots of jokes, and some were good…
Along with these passions, he loved to travel, from early camping trips to Bridgeport, to numerous cruises, and to places all around the world, including very recently in 2023 to Australia and through the Panama Canal, to the Amazon rainforest and Galapagos Islands.
He was a devoted and loving husband and father who spent his life loving his family and friends, helping others, and trying to make this world just a little better each day.
