I remember going to visit my Grandma Lala as a child he was such a great kind hearted man including a sense of humour he would always have me laughing. I would stayed the night at the house and when I would wake up he would ask me mija are you hungry I would say yes Uncle Johnny he would go outside and fire up the bbq.  He would tell such great stories as we would both sit there and draw . My kids  also went to visit as well they had great a time He was always and willing to help. There is one point that my two boys needed clothes he had given a helping hand. He said mija here you go. I just remember washing his clothes in the sink and his tweety bird tattoo as well as him wearing his beanies. He made funny faces as well that had me laughing. I have memories of watching Chips with him. The palelta man would come he asked me if I wanted an ice cream. My kids have their own special memories of him.  He left so many memories behind with my kids and I. I wish he could have met my fiance Angel Anthony De La Rosa and our son Ethan Anthony De La Rosa. He would have loved Ethan he is such a smart little guy.  I will always cherish the memories you leave behind. I love you and miss you. In loving memory of Uncle Johnny

I remember how Uncle Johnny was always so welcoming when we’d stop in to visit Gramma Lala.  He was the official greeter and so gracious in unloading whatever we toted along. In our visits, Uncle Johnny would always ask if we had eaten and if not, would offer to get something for us or fire up the grill. Keeping the kids busy and watching us play was something I know he truly enjoyed, and that continued on even when my own children visited.
Uncle Johnny was such a warmhearted humble man and took pride in his heritage and family. He had many friends, and a huge family that loved him. He was always finding things to keep himself busy and or helping others with home improvements and projects. He enjoyed being in the company of others and loved to hear others talk about their life experiences whether it be about the day to day routine or some grand adventure. When sharing his stories/events they often included much animation and passion.
 I remember when he came out to Orange County to stay awhile before he would later require assistance of daily care, he asked, “Mija is there a good place to eat that serves delicious enchiladas? “. I laughed and knew the exact spot. We visited that place several times and I’m not sure it really was about the food.   Uncle Johnny thoroughly enjoyed “breaking bread” with others because I believe, he knew it was valuable time to spend together and a reminder to relax and enjoy the moment.


Johnnie, I will always remember the stories you shared about growing up in “tougher times” and how we laughed about “making do” with what you had. Hearing the story of you pushing me on my scooter in Elysian Park and ruining my patent leather shoes never got old. I will miss our talks and reminiscing together.

So many memories of joy and laughter with Uncle Johnnie!
Yes, he was a great storyteller.  He loved sharing with me his adventures and favorite meals. He also enjoyed having a bowl of Caldo!! with avocado, of course!  After eating that .... you could see pure happiness in his eyes 😊

My Uncle Johnnie was the best at keeping us kids entertained while visiting Mama Lala! We used to play this game where we would have to run from one area of the front patio area all the way to the staircase in order to be “safe” and Uncle would move patio furniture out of the way so we could play our made up games! He was the best artist too! I would have in my mind a week ahead before our visit what I would want him to draw for me. That was the best.  I admired that talent of his so much that I too would practice my drawing skills! Such great memories!

Uncle Johnnie was a great example of a person having a servant’s heart. He was always happy to see us when we visited and was always willing to help get us settled. My fondest memories of him are when he used to cook for us whether it was grilling meat on the barbecue, frying ground beef & papas or making the most delicious salad ever. I could never duplicate it but I always remember it being very delicious with  everything chopped up very small and a mayo based dressing. I can remember helping him in the kitchen. quite often. Those memories I will always hold close to my heart. Even as Uncle Johnnie got older,  to me he never seemed to age. I mean he was always doing something or working hard to help someone. I regretfully admit I didn’t ever come out to see him once he left Mama Lala’s home. I will always remember him as the best host ever.  Until we meet again  . . . 

Uncle Johnnie  was always the first to greet us when we went to Mama LaLa's.  He would help with parking and unloading really welcomed us with lots of love and happiness.   He always had stories to tell and treasures to share with not only me and my sister and brother but with our kids too.   One time he sent me home with cuttings from a bird of paradise plant that was in the yard at Mama LaLa's and I still have many of those plants growing at my house from those cuttings.   I will always treasure my memories of him.

I will always remember all of the things that Uncle Johnnie did for our family as a child.  He added beautiful stone to the stucco of the home I grew up in and carved a beautiful gate on the side of our house.  Years later when I got married, I brought that gate with me to my new home and it was hung proudly as one of my side gates for years.  The laughter, smiles, and love Uncle had made every day brighter.  I will miss him dearly.
