Kenneth Christopher Rutten, a brave, loyal, and hard-working man, passed away on January 30, 2025, at the age of 81. Ken was born on December 27, 1943, in Breda, Iowa, where he lived on a farm with his parents, four sisters, and two brothers. Growing up in a large family on a working farm instilled in him a strong work ethic. He was a rock solid person, true to his word, just like his Dad taught him.
Ken attended high school in Breda, Iowa. During the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the Army, serving from January 25, 1965, to January 24, 1968, as a Spec 5 in the 94th Engineering Unit near Bien Hoa, northeast of Saigon. Despite the challenging conditions, Ken served honorably and was later diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, attributed to exposure to Agent Orange.
After his discharge, Ken chose to stay in California, where he embarked on a successful career as a construction manager. He worked with prominent builders and managed the home construction of the renowned fiction writer, Dean Koontz, for over four years.
In 1969, Ken met Sue, and they married on July 31, 1971, in Buffalo, New York. Together, they returned to Southern California to build a life and raise a family. Ken is survived by his loving wife, Sue Rutten; his sons, Kevin Rutten (Lori) and Matthew Rutten (Brooke); and his cherished grandchildren, Carter, Davis, Gwen, Tatum, Tyler, Cate, and Sydney.
Ken had a passion for the rifle range and horseback riding. He was known for his great marksmanship and love of John Wayne movies. Ken enjoyed working outdoors and took pride in maintaining his yard and home. He was the best example of a good neighbor and was always ready to lend a hand as "Mr. Fixit." He loved driving his truck and ensured it was washed every Sunday ready for the work week ahead.
Ken loved his family,friends and neighbors and will be missed by all. May his memory always be a blessing.
A memorial service will be held on March 22, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Fairhaven Memorial Park Mortuary, located at 1702 Fairhaven Avenue, Santa Ana, CA 92705.
