Lorraine was born in La Mars, Iowa, in June 1931, to Herbert & Veronica Westphal. She was the oldest of four children. Her siblings were Shirley, Don and John. After high school in Grand Island, NE, Lorraine continued her education at the University of Nebraska and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1953. She was president of her sorority and after college she kept in touch with many of her sorority sisters. Funny story: Fast forward to 2003 … while visiting her son Richard & family in San Diego, they all went to a Christmas tree farm in Escondido where, after 50 years, her friendly voice and charm were easily recognized by a sorority sister who resided in La Jolla at the time.
Lorraine met her husband, Ray Loucks, while growing up in Grand Island. They wed in June of 1953. After honeymooning in San Francisco and Northern California, they started their life together in Santa Monica, CA where she put her degree to work and taught in grade school. Ray and Lorraine welcomed three children: Karen, James, and Richard. Ray Loucks passed in October of 1978.
Lorraine joined Bel Air Church in Sherman Oaks where she met and married Leonard Nystrom in 1981. Together, they moved to a Mission Viejo retirement community and attended Trinity United Presbyterian Church followed by Geneva Presbyterian Church. Leonard passed in 1994. Always active, she attended Bible Study Fellowship and then Community Bible Study (CBS). Geneva is where she met and married Paul Moon in 1996. Paul passed in December 2006
Lorraine led her CBS classes with great compassion over many years. She served as a Core group leader, a Senior leader, Associate Teaching Director and Teaching Director for 15 years from 2001 to 2016. She strived relentlessly to guide her CBS students to a special understanding of the Lord through the written words of the Bible. She did so enthusiastically and successfully.
Lorraine was also independent and could be recognized around town driving her little VW Bug code-named MV Grammy. She spent many happy miles traversing the area in her silver ride. Lorraine possessed a genuine interest in others and was a good listener, offering comfort and encouragement to those who needed it the most. Her friendships were enduring and she treasured the connections she forged throughout her lifetime.
Lorraine will be best remembered for her dedication to the Lord, Community Bible Study service, travel adventures and many years as a beloved educator. Throughout her life, Lorraine’s faith in God was the cornerstone of her existence.
Lorraine was a dear member of the community and will be greatly missed. Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Karen; sons, James and Richard; son-in-law, Dennis Oxton; daughter-in-law, Cindy Loucks; bother Don Westphal; grandchildren, Matt and Megan Oxton, Tyler Loucks and great grandchildren, Levi and Luci. She also leaves countless friends who have loved her and will miss her dearly.
We would like to extend a special thanks to all of the caregivers who provided exceptional support to Lorraine in her final year.
A memorial service will take place at Fairhaven Memorial Park, 1702 Fairhaven Avenue, Santa Ana, CA on Saturday, December 2nd, at 12 noon. RSVP to [email protected]. No flowers please, but donations to Parkinson’s related charities are happily encouraged.
