Nicolas Sandoval Saldaña, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, departed this life on October 17, 2024. Born on January 22, 1936, in Tlaltenango, Zacatecas, Mexico, Nicolas led a life rooted in faith, hard work, and devotion to family.
In his youth, Nicolas joined the Bracero program, becoming part of an era in which Mexican laborers traveled to the United States to help sustain American agriculture and helped shape U.S. History. Working tirelessly in the cotton fields of Arkansas, he labored with resilience and dignity. His story and those of fellow Braceros are preserved in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., where they are honored for their contributions and sacrifices in a time of great need.
Returning to Mexico, Nicolas eventually settled in the United States, where he built a life of purpose and commitment. He dedicated over 30 years to work as a skilled construction worker and a respected real estate agent, creating a foundation of security and opportunity for his family.
It was in his hometown church that he met Maria Refugio “Cuca” Lopez Saldaña. From their first meeting, he knew she was the one with whom he wanted to share his life. In a love story that began with glances and unspoken promises, they married in the same church where they met, embarking on over 65 years of marriage. Together, they raised six children—Yolanda, Martha, Rosa Anna, Nicolas Jr., Ernesto, and Angela—instilling in them values of faith, resilience, and kindness.
More than three decades ago, Nicolas and Cuca embraced the Neo-Catechumenal Way, a faith journey that deepened their bond and strengthened their spiritual lives. Their commitment to this path provided guidance and renewal, helping them face life’s blessings and challenges with grace.
Nicolas is survived by his loving wife, Cuca; their six children; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Known for his warmth, quiet strength, and enduring love, Nicolas often proclaimed to Cuca, “You are the most beautiful woman in my town,” a tender reminder of a love that remained constant and true.
Nicolas Sandoval Saldaña will be remembered as a man of integrity, faith, and devotion to his family. His legacy of love, resilience, and hard work lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
