Peter Winters was born in the coal mining town of Kerkrade in the Netherlands and relocated with his family to Amsterdam. He and his family lived through the devastation of World War II and were all blessed to survive.
Between studies, his favorite pastimes were nature and animals, and at any given time, he had a zoo of some sort, many times sneaking critters into the house. At one point, his mother found his treasure trove of lizards living in his bathtub!
Although Peter might have loved to be a botanist in the Brazilian rainforest, he ultimately found his calling in psychiatry. Upon completing his doctoral exams at the University of Amsterdam in 1954, Peter traveled to Vancouver, B.C. (Canada), where he interned at Royal Columbian Hospital from July 1955 - June 1956. There he met a beautiful nurse who stole his heart: Miss Carinthia Jones. They married and moved to the United States, where he completed a residency in Psychiatry at the Oregon State Hospital, in Salem, Oregon, between 1957 and 1959, having their first two children there. Their next move was to Tacoma, where their third child was born.
Soon after, they moved to Corvallis, Oregon, where the last two children were born. They bought a house on several acres surrounded by farmland, in Crescent Valley, where they raised their five boisterous children (and a menagerie of animals!) during which time Peter maintained a private practice in Psychiatry.
In 1977, Peter joined the U.S. Air Force as a Flight Surgeon, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after taking specialized coursework in Aerospace Medicine and Hospital Management for Commanders. He continued to work as a psychiatrist for the Air Force, with assignments including Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, Montana, RAF Lakenheath in England, and Mountain Home AFB in Idaho.
In 1984, he returned to private practice in Corvallis, Oregon, until 1988, when he became a Psychiatrist for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tacoma, Washington, where he worked until retirement in 1994. He continued to be passionate about psychiatry and worked episodically as a Locum tenens for many more years, allowing him to work a flexible schedule while also exploring different parts of America.
Peter and Carrie loved each other throughout life and left a legacy of love. They are survived by five children, thirteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, including three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren that came into the family by marriage.
