“Polly” was born on November 2, 1927 in Moran, Texas to Beatrice (Tannehill) and Jim Lawhon where she and her sister Lou grew up on her grandfather’s farm. Polly left Texas to attend Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, California and married Charles Funkhouser after graduation. They had three sons: Jim, Greg, and Jeff. When the marriage ended, Polly took a full-time job at Caterpillar Tractors and later John Deere Equipment. After raising her boys as a single mother, Polly met and married Ed May, father of two daughters, Denise and Deanna.
Polly and Ed loved the Orange County coastline and their San Clemente home perched on the bluffs above the sea. Polly moved from managing construction accounts to showing real estate, enjoyed traveling with Ed, and cheering on the California Angels and San Diego Chargers, rarely missing a game. She was an enthusiastic and active member of the Republican Women’s Club and was not shy about sharing her political opinions with anyone, especially her grandchildren.
Polly loved to cook (especially Southern). She loved the beach, her roses (yellow), her wild birds (not cats), and always looking her best. But most of all she loved her family. Polly is survived by Ed, her loving husband of 45 years, and by three sons, two step-daughters, eleven grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. Polly will be deeply missed by everyone she touched.
