Wayne was born on March 13, 1938, in Lovilla, Iowa, to Floyd and Viola Mitchell. In 1940, the family moved to Glendale, California, where he spent his childhood alongside his siblings, Donald and Cathy.
Wayne married the love of his life, Sandy, on March 27, 1957. They shared 68 wonderful years together and raised two children, Deby and Darryl. Huntington Beach became their longtime home, where Wayne lived for the remainder of his life.
From a young age, Wayne enjoyed being outdoors riding his bike through Glendale and delivering newspapers on his paper route. In 1955, he joined the United States Navy and was stationed on Midway Island, serving as a firefighter and was also a part of the crash crew. After his honorable discharge, he continued to serve in the Naval Reserve for an additional four years and later volunteered as a firefighter for the city of Huntington Beach.
Wayne built a long and successful career in construction as both a carpenter and general contractor, building homes across Southern California. He eventually served as the maintenance supervisor for the city of Costa Mesa, where he completed his career before retiring. Even in retirement, he continued to use his skills to help others through volunteer work.
Wayne had many hobbies that brought him joy, including riding motorcycles, off-roading, and camping with his family. He also enjoyed collecting vintage firearms and rare coins. Known for his sense of humor, he loved a good prank. He was a true “do-it-yourself” man who was always willing to lend a hand. Hard-working, generous, and kind, Wayne cherished time spent with his family and friends.
A devout Christian, his faith remained a guiding force throughout his life, and he continued attending church as long as he was able.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents and siblings. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Sandy; his children, Darryl Mitchell and Deby (Dirk) Williams; his grandsons, Tyler (Sherrie) Williams and Travis (Erin) Williams; and his seven great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss their “Pop” greatly.
Wayne will be laid to rest at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, California. A graveside service will take place on December 12, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
